I was scrolling through the Cincinnati Reds tag, when Michael (from our PR department) saw this picture.
He literally lost track of what he was saying in awe of this photo. And then we spent five minutes looking at/discussing it.
I think that requires a reblog.

Yesterday, as I tumblr’d, we did a Twitter chat with Dmitri Young.

I managed to snap a few pictures when he got up to do an impromptu hitting lesson.

Dmitri was absolutely lovely, and we all had a lot of fun chatting. You can see what was asked and what Dmitri answered if you go to the Reds Hall of Fame twitter account.

Why you should never leave the game early.

We are doing a Twitter chat with Dmitri Young at eleven.

Today is turning into Saturday School here on the Reds Tumblr. (See what I did there? I am so clever.)
Kings Junior High School student, Clynn Yeoh, entered into the Doodle 4 Google contest by submitting to Google a doodle of the “Google” art that they show up on their page.  She was to portray her “Best Day Ever.”  As her family immigrated here, this was her entry:
“The first time that I leave my home country to my dream country, the most colorful city I’ve ever seen, and the most wonderful moment in my life. I am in the United States and my new life starts here.”
Google chooses one winner from each state, and they compete against one another through online voting for a $30,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for their school. Voting runs from May 1 - May 10.

Back in the day (am I old enough to say this yet?), I did this thing called We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution. It is a program that “promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students. The We the People textbook, its interactive strategies, and the simulated congressional hearings make teaching and learning exciting for both students and teachers.” (http://new.civiced.org/programs/wtp) (Dropping in quotes and citing sources like a true English major, heyyyy!)

Basically, instead of taking a traditional US Government class as a high school senior, I did mock-Congressional hearings and got to go to Washington, DC for the national competition.

A trip that my alma mater got to repeat (for the eleventh time, or something like that).

While in DC last week, the Highlands High School We The People class/team went to one of the Reds vs. Nationals games, and they got interviewed by Fox Sports Ohio.

See, loving the Constitution and civic virtue are cool and can get you on TV (as well as this blog). Never let anyone tell you differently.

Guest Blogging Like a Pro

The intrepid Jamie Ramsey is on vacation, so we precious interns have been given the task of manning Better Off Red for the week (along with some others).

Today was my day to post, so if you want to read more of my ramblings, hop on over here to check it out!

Here’s an excerpt. IT HAS A CLIFFHANGER I AM A REAL WRITER.

When I was maybe five or six, my family was driving to Reds game, and my dad (being my dad) was doing his best to get my older sister and me psyched up for the game.

Granted, it doesn’t take much to get two kids under the age of ten excited to go to a baseball game, but that’s not the point.

He was asking questions about baseball trivia and doing his best Marty Brennaman impression and spouting off quotes from former Reds players. (“Okay girls, who said, “Bench me or trade me!”?”) The closer we got to the ballpark, the more delirious we got with excitement, and the more he egged us on.

Finally, when we were just a few blocks away from Riverfront Stadium, my dad started calling out the names of the players as if he were announcing the starting lineup.

“And at shortstop, number eleven, BAAAAARRRRRYYYYYYYY–”

Happy birthday, Homer Bailey!
